The 2023 Ford Expedition is almost here, and we expect it to be as capable as it is luxurious. Our preview guide is here to help you get to know this rugged full-size SUV a little better before it arrives later this year, in fall 2022.

What can I expect from the 2023 Ford Expedition?

After a slew of updates for the 2022 model year — including the addition of hands-free BlueCruise driving technology and the off-road-ready Timberline trim model — we don’t expect to see any changes for 2023.

How does the 2023 Ford Expedition drive?

2023 Ford Expedition Towing

As always, the upcoming Expedition will provide a smooth, powerful performance. This full-size SUV has long been a favorite among families with boats to tow and campers to haul, with a max tow rating of up to 9,300 pounds.

Just like last year, the Expedition will offer:

  • Turbocharged 3.5L V6 (375 horsepower, 470 lb-ft of torque)
  • 10-speed automatic transmission
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Optional four-wheel drive

A more powerful version of this turbocharged engine comes standard on the Platinum, generating 400 horses and 480 pound-feet of torque. And an even more powerful version is available for the off-road-ready Timberline trim (or any Expedition with the Stealth Package), boosting total output to 440 horses and 510 pound-feet of torque.

Which 2023 Ford Expedition trim model is best?

The six Expedition trim levels — XL, XLT, Timberline, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum — each have something to offer. The one you think is best will depend on what you want from a full-size SUV.

With the entry-level XL, you’re getting a very impressive list of features at a great price. These include smartphone-friendly infotainment, LED headlights, and the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of safety aids. The XL is also the only Expedition with seating for five passengers, maximizing cargo space.

Step up to the XLT for eight-passenger seating and some additional creature comforts. Tri-zone automatic climate control and extra USB ports help create a very road-trip-friendly people hauler.

The Timberline, introduced for the 2022 model year, is the Expedition’s new trail-friendly trim model. It adds to the XLT lineup with rugged performance upgrades, including off-road-tuned suspension and an electronic limited-slip differential. The Timberline even boosts your comfort, with power-adjustable front seats and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Choose a Limited, King Ranch, or Platinum model, and you’ll enjoy a very luxurious ride. The Limited has all the makings of a luxury SUV, from leather upholstery to a panoramic sunroof. The King Ranch puts a stylish spin on upscale cruising, with Western-themed flourishes like Del Rio leather seating and Stone Gray exterior trim.

If you’re looking for the most luxurious option, you’ll find it in the top-tier Platinum. This Expedition is certainly fancy, with wood-and-leather interior trim and front seats with massage functions.

How much will the 2023 Ford Expedition cost?

Ford hasn’t released official figures, but we expect this full-size SUV to start around $54,000. The price will vary, however, depending on trim level and equipment.

Pricing was accurate at the time of article writing. All pricing is subject to change. See the manufacturer and/or Dealer for up-to-date pricing.
