The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning and 2024 Chevy Silverado EV are competing for your attention with their tow-friendly, all-electric powertrains. How different are these all-new EV trucks? And which one is right for you? Our comparison guide has the answers you seek.
Cutting-Edge Features: 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
Both of these upcoming trucks are set to deliver ultra-modern driving features. For instance, both will offer their respective automaker’s version of semi-autonomous, hands-free driving technology. And both will pack cutting-edge infotainment systems with big touchscreen interfaces.
We know more about the F-150 Lightning right now, because it’s due out much sooner than the Silverado EV. However, it still appears to have the edge in this category. Ford’s Pro Power Onboard station gives you the means to wield heavy-duty power tools whoever you go. And the Mega Power Frunk (front truck) provides an extra 14 cubic feet of cargo space, is water resistant, and adds four power outlets and two USB ports to power all your camping gear. The frunk can handle up to 400 pounds of gear, and it’s spacious enough to fit two sets of golf clubs. Onboard scales tell you exactly how much weight you’re hauling. Then there’s the truck’s Interior Work Surface, which gives you space to work on a laptop or eat lunch comfortably.
Battery Range: 2024 Chevy Silverado EV
Neither of these EV trucks have been EPA-rated yet. But, according to Chevrolet, the Silverado EV’s battery will give you 400 miles of range! That’s an incredible figure, especially when you consider everything this electric truck can do, including powering all four wheels and tow and haul major weight.
Meanwhile, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning offers either a standard battery pack or an extended-range version. According to Ford, the F-150 Lightning can travel 230 miles between charges using the standard battery. The extended-length battery extends the range to 300 miles.
Max Towing: 2022 Ford F-150
Here, the F-150 Lightning gives you the advantage. With the extended-range battery and the right configuration, this battery-powered truck can tow up to 10,000 pounds. (We don’t yet know how much this truck can tow using the standard battery pack.)
Chevy says that its Silverado EV will be able to tow max loads of 8,000 pounds. (The automaker also says it’s working on a more heavy-duty Silverado EV truck that will tow max loads of 20,000 pounds, but we don’t know when to expect it.)
Availability: 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
You can order the F-150 Lightning right now and expect delivery in the coming months! Deliveries for Ford’s first-ever full-size electric truck are scheduled to begin spring of 2022.
The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, on the other hand, isn’t due out until a full year later, in spring of 2023. And that’s only if production of this EV truck doesn’t experience any unforeseen delays, as has been the case with so many new vehicles lately.
Your New EV Truck
In the end, we think you’ll be happiest with the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. Ford’s all-new full-size electric truck delivers a wide range of high-tech options, stronger towing capabilities, and, best of all, it’s available in the very foreseeable future.
