2018 Ford Mustang

After a mid-cycle refresh, the 2018 Ford Mustang is pushing ahead of the competition with more speed and style than ever.

What's New for the 2018 Ford Mustang?

A lot! This year represents the modern generation's first mid-cycle refresh. Compared to previous models, you'll see a lot of exterior styling tweaks - especially in the front and rear ends. Mainly, though, the 2018 Ford Mustang aims to please - and to speed past competitors - with its redesigned engines and transmissions. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine gets more torque, and the classic V8 turns up the heat with additional horsepower. The brand new 10-speed automatic transmission is smooth shifting and refined, giving the new Mustang its most comfortable ride yet.

What Are the 2018 Ford Mustang Powertrain Options?

This year, you can choose between two engines, each of which can be paired to one of two transmissions. Ford retooled almost all of these options for the 2018 model year. The entry-level turbocharged four-cylinder sees a boost in torque, bringing output up to 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. This engine comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, giving speed freaks the control they crave. However, you can optimize fuel economy at high speeds with the new, smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. This combo is EPA-rated for 21 city/32 highway mpg.

For iconic Mustang speed, however, you're going to need the GT's 5.0-liter V8 engine. This year, it's more powerful, upping the ante with 460 horses and 420 pound-feet of torque. The six-speed manual gearbox has also been revised for enhanced performance. If you prefer a smoother-shifting ride, however, you might be interested in switching over to the 10-speed automatic transmission.

Which Ford Mustang Is the Best?

That all depends on what you're after. Are you looking for top speed? Or would you prefer a sporty ride with impressive fuel economy? What level of luxury are you after? No matter what your preferences, there's a 2018 Ford Mustang for you.

This year, the Mustang EcoBoost is the entry-level model. It comes with the aforementioned turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a surprising amount of performance gear. If your Mustang has the manual gearbox, launch control gives you an extra dose of speed from a standing start. An electric line-lock locks the front brakes independently of the rear brakes, so you can facilitate burnouts in your spare time. The limited-slip rear differential gives you maximum control over performance. Inside the EcoBoost, you'll find all the infotainment basics - including Bluetooth and two USB ports to help you stay connected. Keyless entry and ignition free you from having to pursue a key ring in the depths of a bottomless handbag.

To add a heady dose of luxury to the thrifty four-cylinder powertrain setup, check out the Mustang EcoBoost Premium. It comes with the aforementioned performance gear but adds even greater style with leather upholstery and revised power trim. Convenience features, like power front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control, help you set the scene for a luxurious ride to work. The EcoBoost Premium also adds upgraded infotainment technology - namely, the Sync 3 system. In addition to an 8-inch touchscreen and voice controls, it includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This smartphone technology displays apps like Phone, Music, and Maps on your central touchscreen, so you can stay connected with minimal distraction from traffic.

The iconic 2018 Ford Mustang GT takes performance up several notches with the 5.0-liter V8 engine. This year, the newly revised V8 is more powerful than ever, churning out 460 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. The new engine also includes direct and port injection, optimizing fuel efficiency. In terms of comfort and convenience, the Mustang GT is similarly equipped to the EcoBoost.

In the GT Premium, you get the GT's muscle-bound V8 engine and all the modern creature comforts of the EcoBoost Premium. If you're looking for the maximum speed and style, you've found it in the GT Premium.

How Fast Is the 2018 Ford Mustang?

This year, Ford expects big things for the newly re-tuned Mustang. Thanks to several powertrain upgrades, it's set to retake the road from its rival, the Chevrolet Camaro. Thanks to the Mustang GT's new power push, Ford expects it to go from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds. That's an improvement over both the previous models from this generation, who get there in 4.3 seconds, and the Camaro, which gets there in 4.1 seconds.
